PERCHTA

Perchta, also called Frau Percht, is a mythical figure from Germanic and Slavic mythology who appears during the Rauhnächte (Twelve Nights) between Christmas and New Year and is often interpreted as a symbol of the transition from darkness to light, from cold to warmth. Perchta is often seen as the goddess of the in-between spaces, the transitions from old to new, the time between the years. She is said to punish laziness and reward diligence and helpfulness. Perchta is sometimes associated with Frau Holle, possibly as her southern German counterpart. She often combines good and evil traits, light and dark, light and darkness. She is considered a lucky charm and protector. After Frau Holle had been increasingly reduced to a wild and desolate monster over time, many of her good and magical qualities were transferred to the “Mother Mary” who is venerated in the Christian faith. She wears a white dress and blue cloak.
